MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT:

With the fall fishing season now in full swing, I want to take a little time to connect with the LIBBA membership. This will be the first issue of the LIBBA Newsletter that we have had for a long while. It’s something that I as the President think needs to be done. We will make every effort to get this newsletter out four times a year.

I am not going to talk about access issues; I will leave that to EXVP Chuck Hollins and Chairperson of the Board, Willie Young. What I will talk about are the membership issues. The LIBBA is run by a Board of Directors who are responsible to me. These volunteer directors devote a ton of man hours to make the many committees run smoothly. The only thing we ask of the membership is to pay your dues! With thousands of beach access permits issued each year, I find it amazing that the LIBBA membership is less than 1,200 families. I don’t know the answer as to why, but I can tell you it bothers me. Is it that we have no immediate threats of beach closings? If that is what you think, you are terribly wrong. Take a good look at what is going on down at the Outer Banks of North Carolina! It’s going to come this way and we have to be ready to defend ourselves for the use of our access to our beautiful Long Island beaches and recreational areas. The only way we can do that is by increasing our membership and to make sure we have strong political contacts.   LIBBA will take care of the political part; it’s up to you, the membership, to increase our number of members.

We can now collect dues and new memberships on our web site: www.libba.com. PayPal is now available on our web page to facilitate easy payments. Any ‘NEW’ members that join now, their dues will be paid through 2011. Just go to our web page for more details.

If you know someone who is not a LIBBA member and drives on the beach, the question should be ‘WHY’? If you have any ideas on how to increase the membership just call my cell phone: 516-521-3822 or leave a message on the LIBBA Hot Line: 516-579-1344, all of your calls will be returned.

We will be doing many shows in 2011 and we can use all the volunteer help we can get! Also coming up will be Operation Holiday Spirit. This will be our 16th year of collecting and distributing toys for Long Island’s needy families and for children in our local hospitals. Again, we need volunteers, please come forward and help, it’s personally rewarding.

We are moving back our Scholarship Dinner this year to February. We have plans to do something a little different this year, as the plans come together we will let you know.

Help is needed with all of these committees, so if you want to get involved just give me a call.

What is Billy Lomnicki’s future as the President of LIBBA? That’s going to be up to my Board of Directors and the membership. As many of the membership knows, my wife Nancy is facing two more hip replacement surgeries this winter. I will do my best to continue as your President but that’s going to be up to you.

Be part of the solution, not part of the problem…

Nancy and I wish you and your families the best of the Holiday Season and a Healthy 2011.

EXECUTIVE VP REPORT:

Just like so many years in the past, our access has taken a hard hit from Mother Nature. This past spring with storm after storm coming through, most of our beaches were washed away. Let’s start with State Parks. The Nor’easter that came through back in March came within inches of eradicating all of Robert Moses, and Gilgo State Parks. With a quick response from State Parks, the Department of Transportation and a private contractor, a month and a half of trucking and moving over 300,000 cubic yards of sand, two major washed out areas were filled. After that State Parks alone continued to move another 100,000 cubic yards to fill in smaller areas, including the access road to Demo. During this time, Betsy at Robert Moses contacted LIBBA and a few other groups for help in planting grass along Ocean Parkway to protect the dunes. So on a cold, wet, and rainy Sunday over 75 people got together along with regional director Ron Foley and Chip Gorman to plant grass over a 250 foot section of dune. I pass this area often and the dune is rebuilding nicely. One beach that needed sand, Gilgo could not be completed and has had to remain closed all season. The Montauk area is no different – the area up around the light house and the beaches were hit hard.

Suffolk County Parks

There is a new Parks Commissioner of Suffolk County Parks, Joseph Montuori. Mr. Montuori became commissioner back in May after retiring as the Park Manger of Hecksher State Park for many years. LIBBA and MSA had a chance to sit down and meet with the new commissioner. The meeting went well as we explained who we are, and offered our help in any way. Mr. Montuori explained that this is all new to him and was going through a learning process about beach access and Suffolk County Parks. Some of the topics we covered were better access, the Burma Road Smith Point, and camper rentals on the beach. I have met and talked with the commissioner a few times since then, and the problems that have come up were worked out. We will be working closely over the winter months to accomplish as much as possible.

1st VICE President’s REPORT

This is the time to clean your trucks, put away your rods and get ready for the holiday season. LIBBA has a full line of products for the gift giving season. Please support the cause and wear your logo proudly. Let people know who you are and what you believe in. The sportsman's shows are coming up in January February and March. I hope to see many of you at these events. Buying LIBBA properties helps the organization bring in monies that help with the cause of beach access.

People ask me why I’ve spent so much time on the LIBBA board. Easy answer – the beach is my second home, my children have grown up there, friendships have been made there and friends have died and been symbolically buried there. I will fight for our rights to these beaches and I hope more of you will come join the LIBBA board for these same reasons. We are always happy to have new people come on board. Please watch your newsletter and or check the website for the date and place of LIBBA's annual meeting. Board elections will be held at this meeting.

My wife Joyce, my daughters Jacki and Kim and I would like to wish each of you and your families a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year. - COOKY LIBBA #672

MEMBERSHIP:

Hi everyone,

For those that do not know me, I am Bea Noguier, the Membership Director. We have been updating LIBBA’s membership records over the past two years and there are still 75-100 people who need to update their information. People who do not have complete records are the people that have not received a newsletter or letter in the past. I have worked hard trying to complete this work but now it is your turn to help me. Please contact me if you have not received anything from LIBBA as we need to fix this problem. If you have moved or even changed a phone number, anything that pertains to your information that has been given to us in the past please contact me through the website or call me. We need to correct the problem; we want to let our members what is going on. You can even go on the web site and copy the renewal form and send it to me, or just even call me to verify you information. Everything you give me is confidential.

I would also like to mention to the people that have not had the opportunity to pay their “present and or past dues” to do so as soon as possible. We would hate to loose you as a member because of lack of payment.

Also, in up dating our records, it appears that some members have not paid their membership dues for some time. Some owe dues for just this year 2010, others last year. Your continued support is very important to us. Without your support, it becomes difficult to protect the privilege to surf fish, open up new access to surf anglers and to continue our conservation efforts. We represent your best interests for access on both the State and County levels. Our fishing privileges are in danger all the time and we fight for them every day. We need your support! If you drive on the beach, you should be a LIBBA member. Be a part of the solution!

In order to understand how the LIBBA can serve you better, we would appreciate your taking a few minutes to respond to the following questions by checking one of the following:

             I would like to continue my membership in the LIBBA. Enclosed are my dues of

 $ 50.00 for the years of '09 & '10.

 $ 25.00 for the year 2010.

             I have not rejoined LIBBA because I have moved out of the area

             I have not rejoined LIBBA because (please explain the reason)

                ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...……

We also now accept payment by Pay Pal; please go to the web site www.LIBBA.com for instructions.   Thank you for your attention to this matter, we appreciate your cooperation.
